What Is High-Intensity Laser Therapy and How Does It Work?
A lot of people come in and ask me the same thing: “What exactly is this laser treatment you’re talking about?”
Fair question. It sounds a little high-tech, and most folks just want to know if it’s going to help them feel better without a lot of hassle.
High-intensity laser therapy (sometimes called Class IV laser or HILT) is a non-invasive treatment we use here to help with pain, inflammation, and tissue healing. It uses a focused beam of light energy that goes deeper into the body than the other “cold lasers” you might have heard about.
Here’s the simple version of how it works.
Your cells have little power plants inside them called mitochondria. When those power plants get the right kind of light energy from the laser, they start producing more ATP — that’s basically the energy your cells use to repair themselves and function better.
At the same time, the light helps calm down inflammation, improves blood flow in the area, and can ease the pain signals that are firing. Some patients describe it as giving the tissue a little boost so it can start healing more efficiently.
The higher power of this laser lets the light reach muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints that sit deeper under the skin. That’s why it’s useful for things like low back pain, knee pain, shoulder issues, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, arthritis-type discomfort, and even some nerve-related symptoms.
What does a treatment feel like?
Most people say it just feels like a gentle, warm sensation over the area. It’s not painful. Sessions are usually pretty short, and there’s no downtime — you can go right back to your day afterward. We do have you wear protective eyewear during the treatment just to be safe.
One important thing to know: the effects often build over a series of visits. It’s not usually a one-and-done kind of thing. Each session helps the tissue keep responding, so we typically recommend a course of treatments based on what you’re dealing with.
This isn’t magic, and it’s not a cure-all. But for a lot of the people we see, it becomes a helpful piece of the plan — especially when we combine it with the other care options we do here.
If you’ve been dealing with stubborn pain or an injury that just isn’t settling down the way you’d like, this is something we can talk about. Happy to walk you through whether it might be a good fit for your situation.
Just ask us next time you’re in, or give the office a call. We’re here to help you figure out the next step.
